Veterans Services

Individual Counseling

Is always available to our veterans. We accept most forms of insurance and have a sliding scale fee available for those that may not have insurance.

Veterans face unique challenges that can take a toll on anyone’s mental health. Transitioning out of the military back into civilian life create high stress in all aspects of life from a change in family relationships and relocating, to finding a job in the civilian workforce and being able to translate your military skills to civilian one. Some suffer more severely from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, (PTSD), Depression or other issues.

Military Family Counseling

Families that have a spouse or immediate family member stationed overseas, especially in dangerous areas, juggle the day-to-day responsibilities of parenting and the stress that their loved one may become seriously injured or worse, parish in battle. Spouses that take care of the family needs while the active duty member is away, develop routines and systems to get daily tasks completed, care for children and basically carry on as a single parent. Older siblings may carry more responsibility at home than their classmates. When the active duty family member returns, families can struggle with readjusting to having their loved one back.

The Counselors at Family Service of Racine understand the unique situations of Military personnel whether they are active duty, transitioning into civilian life, or a military family readjusting. To learn more about our Military/Veterans services, please call us at 262-634-2391

1000 Words – Veterans Art Therapy

Art therapy is a non-threatening way to help people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), experience their feelings. PTSD is extremely common among war veterans, especially those who have experienced combat. Symptoms can include psychological distress, depression, substance abuse, hyper-vigilance and diminished interest from previous hobbies and passions.

Family Service of Racine’s One Thousand Words Veterans Art Therapy program is based on art being both healing and life-enhancing. Our counselors use the creative process to help veterans work through traumatic experiences, cope better with stress, build better relationships and increase cognitive abilities.

Mentoring

Many Veterans of the military have taken their knowledge and training and transitioned very successfully into the civilian world. Many have beaten PTSD, overcome many hardships, and learned how to find their roll with their families again. We know that our military veterans love to support each other!

Through our Veterans Art Therapy program, we are looking for veterans who have an interest or skill in art and would be interested in speaking with participants of the art therapy program. An example would be how you developed an interest in your particular medium and then describing some obstacle you faced whether it was transitioning to civilian life, PTSD, depression or other issue. Maybe include a few things you did to overcome your obstacle and if possible, relate it to your art. To get specific information about the schedule for the One Thousand Words Veterans Art Therapy program, contact Family Service of Racine at 262-634-2391.
