Ways to Work

Ways to Work was originated by The McKnight Foundation in Minnesota in 1984 as the Family Loan Program. In 1996, The McKnight Foundation partnered The alliance for Children and Families of Milwaukee, Wisconsin to expand the program nationally. Ways to Work is a federally certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and is an authorized community Reinvestment Act (CRA) program.

Since 1984, Ways to Work nationally has provided several million in loans to thousands of families. The local Ways to Work program was established in 2010 by Family Service of Racine.

We understand that even hardworking people need financial assistance at various times in their lives. The Ways to Work program assists low-income families by providing small loans to purchase a used auto which allows them to stay on the job or in school, even when faced with unexpected challenges.

Eligibility

• Must be employed a minimum of 20 hours per week for at least 6 months

OR

• Pursuing post high school education

AND

• Be a resident of Racine County
• Must have a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License
• Your other loan sources are exhausted
• Have sufficient disposable income
• Be a custodial parent of a child under 17 years of age (18 if child is in school)

Income Limits by Family Size

• 2- $43,450
• 3-$48,900
• 4-$54,300
• 5-$58,650
• 6-$63,000
• 7-$67,350

Loan Terms

• Interest – 8% maximum
• Loan length – 30 months
• Maximum loan amount - $6000

Applicant Requirements

• Must go through the application process
• Attend financial management classes the length of the loan
• Loan repayment within 30 months
